Mission

Mission

Expertise and perspective beyond legal advice to support your business in mastering complex transactions and projects.

Law can be an intricate field to navigate, even for managers or lawyers with a sophisticated understanding of its complexities as transdisciplinary context can complicate projects and transactions. Changes in regulatory environment are creating new complex demands.

Drawing upon 30+ years of experience with leading international insurance and banking organisations, I provide legal expertise and support concerning insurance, reinsurance and other financial transactions. Having covered a broad range of tailor-made and traditional transactions executed in private and capital markets, my perspective straddles re/insurance and finance and transcends international borders. My services further include legal advice in respect of corporate, regulatory and compliance matters or projects – with a focus on the insurance and reinsurance sector.

My support continues where traditional legal advice stops. I adopt an ‘inhouse’ view, taking into account relevant issues from a holistic and transdisciplinary perspective. As circumstances dictate, I – for example – consider the risk or investment analysis and related risk exposures, the operational or control environment and mitigating or implementation measures to meet your business objectives.

I provide support to my clients where specialist knowledge, additional firepower or an independent validation is desired. Leveraging my broad network, I can onboard additional specialists as required to facilitate the successful completion of the task. Managing complex transactions and diverse projects have been a hallmark of my professional career.

In my practice, I strive to take solution orientation to heart and contribute my expertise to the success of my clients. Understanding the client’s interests and context and engaging in an open and creative dialogue has allowed me to earn their trust. In my experience, such effective collaboration is the core of lasting business success.

About

About

perspective beyond legal advice with Thomas Bruendler

Having received the bar admission in Switzerland, I spent my early professional career in banking (1989-1998). During my time with Union Bank of Switzerland, I specialised in international structured finance – both as a legal and financial professional. During that time, I learned the discipline needed to rigorously craft and review complex sets of documents. It also provided a broad perspective but detailed understanding of the financial aspects of transactions owing to my ongoing training in accounting and corporate finance.

Following this experience, I joined the nascent alternative risk transfer team of Allianz in 1998. The unit acted as Centre of Competence for the global insurance group, and this provided me with a unique opportunity to broaden my professional horizons and gain expertise in the insurance and reinsurance market. The closely-knit, international team specialised in bespoke transactions – executing tailor-made risk solutions to large global corporate clients.

In my position as Group General Counsel, I was privileged to build and lead an international Legal & Compliance team for more than two decades. Adapting to change was a constant: supporting the business to develop new business offerings, expanding the corporate footprint across jurisdictions, guiding the organisation into a fully regulated, Solvency II compliant enterprise, and assuming responsibilities beyond the Legal & Compliance remit.

During my career, I worked with many outstanding colleagues, peers and business leaders. They have been invaluable sources of guidance and challenge, enabling me to hone my expertise. They have inspired me with the curiosity to learn and adapt, to look at situations from different angles and apply ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking. And above all, learning the art of collaboration with colleagues and clients and leveraging the best of the team.
